How do I create new custom fields?

Create a Custom Data Field

You can create custom data fields to store additional contact information in Message.


Add a Custom Field

  1. Click Manage Fields.

  2. From the left-hand menu, select the program you want to add the field to.

  3. In the top-right corner, click Add Custom Field.

Configure the Field

Field Name Rules

  1. Enter a field name that follows these requirements:

    • Must start with a letter (cannot begin with a number)

    • Must use underscores instead of spaces

    • Must contain only lowercase letters

    • Must be unique within the program

  2. Choose a field type.


Optional Settings

  1. (Optional) Enter a display name.

    • Display names control how the field appears in the contact profile.

    • Example: first_name can display as First Name.

    • Display names must also be unique within the program.

  2. (Optional) Set a default value.

    • Default values automatically populate the field for new contacts.

    • Boolean fields can default to true or false.

    • To leave the field blank by default, leave the default value empty.


Save the Field

  1. Click Add Field to create the new custom field.

The field appears alphabetically on the Manage Fields page and is immediately available for:

  • CSV imports and updates

  • Messaging personalization

  • Simple and advanced searches

Refresh Advanced Search Filters

When running an advanced search for the first time after creating a new field:

  1. Open Advanced Search.

  2. Click Clear all filters to refresh the available field list.

This ensures your new field appears as a selectable search option.
