Installing and configuring Message for Marketing Cloud

If you have Message for Salesforce, Modern Campus also offers a connector that allows you to use Message as part of Marketing Cloud journey. Speak to your account team if you're interested in adding this to your account.

Our team will typically install and configure Message for Marketing Cloud for you, but if you're feeling adventurous you can do it yourself. You'll need to jump back and forth between Salesforce CRM and Marketing Cloud as you connect the two platforms. Here's how:

Step 1: Setting up Remote Site Settings in Salesforce CRM

  1. Within Salesforce CRM, go to Setup - Remote Site Settings

  2. Click "New Remote Site"
  3. Add the following information:
    1. Remote Site Name: MessageforMarketingCloud
    2. Remote Site URL:

  4. Click Save

Step 2: Setting up the Connected App in Salesforce CRM

  1. Staying with Salesforce CRM, go to Setup - App Manager

  2. Click New Connected App
  3. Use the following information:
    1. Connected App Name: Message for Marketing Cloud
    2. Connected Email: your email address

    3. Check the "Enable OAuth Settings" box
    4. Callback URL:
    5. Add these two Available OAuth Scopes to the Selected OAuth Scopes box:
      1. Manage User Data via APIs (api)
      2. Perform requests at any time (refresh_token,offline_access)
    6. You can leave all the other options set to their defaults

  4. Click Save

Step 3: Starting to Add the Action to Journey Builder

In this step, you'll start adding the Message action to Journey Builder. You won't complete the install in this step, but we'll need to start to get data we'll need connecting it to Salesforce CRM. It's easiest to have Marketing Cloud and Salesforce CRM open in their own tabs.

  1. Log in to Marketing Cloud and go to Setup - Installed Packages
  2. Click the New button within Installed Packages
  3. Use the name "Modern Campus" for the name field. You can leave description blank - or add you own if you like. Click Save
  4. Copy the JWT Signing Secret

Step 4: Generating the Modern Campus Endpoint URL

  1. Leaving the Marketing Cloud package install open and incomplete, go back to Salesforce CRM
  2. Open the App Picker and go to Modern Campus Message
  3. Go to the Settings tab and toggle Enable Modern Campus Message for Journey Builder on
  4. Paste the JWT Signing Secret into the text box and click Generate MC Endpoint URL

  5. Copy the URL from the pop-up

Step 5: Completing the Action in Journey Builder

  1. Go back to where you left off in Marketing Cloud
  2. Click the Add Component button
  3. Select "Journey Builder Activity" and click next
  4. Use the following information
    1. Name: MC Message
    2. Category: Message
    3. Endpoint URL: use the endpoint URL you generated in Step 4.
  5. Click Save

Step 6: Verify Journey Builder action

Go to Journey Builder and create a new journey. You should see MC Message as an option within Message actions. Congrats! You're ready to go.
