Save responses to your program message in a custom data field

By using a program message, you can ask a question and save the response to a custom field. This data is now available to download or use in a future advanced search or message condition.

In order to download the data, export your contacts and locate the correct data column on your file.

 

Create your program message using the message template.

  1. Fill out your new program message and ask a clear question.
    • In the below question, we have asked the contact to respond 1, 2, or 3.
  2. Use the 5th column to indicate what to save and where to save it.
    • We will save their answers to the custom field fafsa_2026.

 

 

Create the new custom data field in your program.

  1. Select the Programs tab.
  2. Select Manage Fields.
  3. Click "Add New Field."
  4. Create the field name using lower case letters and underscores. This should match the field name you have indicated in the 5th column on your program message template.

Note: If you are asking for a more complicated response, choose "String" as the field type.
